What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

Care for a dog with HVDRR typically includes calcium supplements and active vitamin D to maintain normal calcium levels. However, even with treatment, these dogs have persistent low calcium levels, requiring careful monitoring by a vet. Prognosis can be challenging due to the nature of the disorder.

Symptoms

A dog with HVDRR may show abnormal bone growth, weakness, and alopecia symptoms. Despite high vitamin D levels, the dog's body remains resistant to it, leading to persistent low calcium levels, which can result in serious health issues. Dogs with HVDRR typically display symptoms from a young age, including stunted growth, lameness, and bone deformities.
