Thrombopathia Landseer type is a genetic disorder affecting Landseer Newfoundland dogs caused by a mutation in the RASGRP2 gene. It prevents platelets from sticking to each other. As a result, blood is unable to clot normally.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There is no known cure for thrombopathia Landseer type. Veterinarians should be informed before any significant surgeries to have blood on hand in case of transfusion. Dogs should also be monitored for signs of internal bleeding, like bloody stool.

Symptoms

Symptoms of thrombopathia Landseer type include excessive bleeding from the gums and recurring nosebleeds. Dogs may also suffer from internal bleeding, significant bruising, and excessive bleeding as a result of even minor injuries.
