What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

Treatment of symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy is often life-long. Medications can help grow nails back, as can supplements like omega 3 fatty acids and biotin. Claw regrowth can be slow.

Symptoms

Signs of symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy typically appear in young-adult to middle-aged dogs. They typically begin with excessive nail licking. Claws will also appear to be lifted from the nail bed. Over time, dogs with the condition will lose all claws. While claws may regrow, they tend to be brittle and crumbly. Secondary infections may occur.
