X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency occurs in Basset Hounds due to a mutation on the IL2RG gene. Dogs with the disorder lack an important protein that supports immune function. As a result, they experience illness, chronic infections, and failure to thrive. The disorder often leads to death by 4 months of age.
