Autosomal Recessive Severe Combined Immunodeficiency is an immunocompromising disease that inhibits the immune system’s production of white blood cells. Dogs with ARSCID are unable to fight infection and disease, resulting in early death. In Frisian Water Dogs, this is caused by a mutation in the RAG1 gene. Both parents must be carriers for ARSCID for the litter to be affected.

Frisian Water Dog

A brown dog with floppy ears is looking up at the camera with its mouth open and tongue out. The dog is standing in a field of tall grass.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There is no cure for ARSCID. Treatment includes management of infections caused by the mutation and management of its symptoms. Dogs with symptoms of ARSCID should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Symptoms

Frisian Water Dogs with ARSCID experience chronic infections and disease. They also may have digestive issues like chronic diarrhea and vomiting, weight loss, lethargy, retarded growth, and failure to thrive. These symptoms typically begin around 3 months of age. ARSCID almost always results in early death.
