The gene CRD2 causes early-onset retinal degeneration and blindness in Pitbull Terriers. Dogs with two copies of the IQCB1 gene will develop severe vision loss by early adulthood. This condition is inherited, and both parents must carry the gene for their offspring to be affected.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There's no cure for CRD2. Caring for a dog with CRD2 involves creating a safe and supportive environment. Maintain a consistent home layout to help the dog get around more easily and avoid moving furniture too frequently. Provide enough lighting in dim areas to reduce disorientation. Testing early can help prevent this condition in the next generation.

Symptoms

Dogs affected by CRD2 show signs of visual impairment before reaching one year of age. These symptoms may include bumping into objects and hesitancy when moving, especially in low-light conditions. As the retinal degeneration progresses, the dog's vision deteriorates further, leading to blindness by early adulthood.
