Pyometra is a genetic condition in female dogs and is associated with a mutation in the ABCC4 gene. It is one of the most common diseases among female dogs. In most cases, it occurs when E. coli enters the uterus. The condition causes the uterus to fill with bacteria and pus.

Golden Retriever

A black dog with a tan chest and a red and black collar is sitting in the grass. The dog's head is turned to the side, and it is looking up. There are trees in the background.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

Pyometra is a very serious condition and should be treated immediately. An ovariohysterectomy—removal of the ovaries and uterus—is the primary defense. In some cases, dogs also require IV fluids and antibiotics to treat the disease. If left untreated, the condition can be deadly.

Symptoms

The primary sign of pyometra is vaginal discharge, often bloody. Dogs with the condition may also be lethargic, lack appetite, and vomit. Additional symptoms include a distended stomach, weakness, and pale gums.
