Postoperative hemorrhage is a genetic disorder that affects blood clot stability. Dogs with the condition have reduced levels of alpha-2 antiplasmin activity. The condition can cause significant bleeding after surgery.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

Treatment is provided in the form of an antifibrinolytic drug, which maintains the stability of an essential blood-clotting protein. This medication can be administered prior to surgery.

Symptoms

Signs of postoperative hemorrhage typically appear within 1-2 days following surgery. They include excessive bruising in the days following surgery, as well as uncontrollable bleeding from the sight of the wound.
