Polyneuropathy is a neurological syndrome found in Rottweiler, Black Russian Terrier, and Alaskan Husky dogs. In these breeds, it is caused by a mutation of the RAB3GAP1 gene. The condition is inherited in the autosomal recessive fashion, meaning both parents must be carriers in order for a litter to risk developing the condition.

A black and white dog with a happy expression is looking up at the camera with its mouth open. The dog's ears are perked up, and it appears to be excited.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There is no known cure for polyneuropathy. Many choose euthanasia as the compassionate choice for dogs with this condition.

Symptoms

Symptoms of polyneuropathy appear between 4 and 5 months of age. They begin as visual problems and progress to paralysis of the larynx, regurgitation, and gait abnormalities. Eventually, the disease can progress to severe ataxia.
