Necrotizing meningoencephalitis, or pug dog encephalitis, is a genetic condition affecting small dog breeds with unknown causes. The condition causes inflammation of the central nervous system. It is a progressive and fatal disease.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

Though there is no cure for necrotizing encephalitis, its symptoms may be treated with medications to minimize seizures, suppress the immune system, and reduce inflammation. Chemotherapy is also used in some cases.

Symptoms

Symptoms of necrotizing encephalitis may appear anytime between 6 months and 7 years of age. Dogs with the condition may experience seizures, ataxia, an abnormal gait, and blindness.
