Mucopolysaccharidosis VI

Mucopolysaccharidosis VI (MPS VI) is a progressive metabolic condition caused by an enzyme arylsulfatase B (ARBS) deficiency. This enzyme is essential for breaking down glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), large sugar molecules, within the cells. When ARSB is deficient, GAGs accumulate in the lysosomes, leading to cellular dysfunction and cell death. MPS VI is commonly seen in breeds such as Miniature Pinschers, Miniature Schnauzers, Welsh Corgis, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.

Genetic research has linked this gene and condition in the following breeds:

Miniature Poodle

A brown and white dog is running through a grassy field. The dog's tail is wagging, and it looks happy and energetic. There are some rocks and trees in the background.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

Care for a dog with MPS VI is mainly supportive, as there is no cure. While some dogs can live for several years, pet parents should have open discussions with veterinarians regarding their pet's quality of life as the disease progresses.

Symptoms

Affected dogs may experience a range of symptoms, including stunted growth, skeletal deformities, progressive corneal cloudiness, and joint hyperlaxity, which causes mobility issues. Facial and limb abnormalities and changes in gait may also occur. The earliest signs often appear by three months of age, and eye issues typically emerge by seven months.
