Leukodystrophy is a genetic disease caused by a mutation in the CYTB gene. It prevents dogs from properly producing myelin. As a result, nerve cells are damaged, destroyed, and fire randomly, severely affecting coordination.

Leukodystrophy cannot be cured. Treatment can be given in the form of supportive care.

Symptoms

Signs of leukodystrophy typically present at one month of age. They include loss of hind leg muscle control, tremors, and weakness. Dogs may also experience dementia, lack of appetite, vision problems, and incontinence.
