What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There is no known cure for ichthyosis. Symptoms may be helped with medicated shampoos and rinses to moisturize skin and prevent excess itching. In extreme cases where quality of life is affected, euthanasia may be the most compassionate choice.

Symptoms

Signs of ichthyosis typically appear in the first month of life. They include extremely dry skin, large, dark scales, and keratinized skin patches. Dogs may also experience thickening of foot pads.
