Ichthyosis in American Bulldogs is a genetic skin condition caused by a mutation in the NIPAL4 gene. The condition causes flaky and scaly skin. This condition is inherited in the autosomal recessive fashion, meaning both parents must be carriers for a litter to inherit the mutation.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There is no known cure for ichthyosis. Skin may be soothed with medicated shampoos or rinses. Antibiotics may also be prescribed for any secondary infections that arise.

Symptoms

Signs of ichthyosis typically appear around 2 weeks of age. They include large, oily flakes and scaly skin. Dogs with the condition are susceptible to secondary infections of the skin, ear, and footpads as a result of the condition.
