Congenital hypothyroidism is a genetic condition affecting the thyroid. Dogs with the condition lack an enzyme needed for proper thyroid function. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion, meaning both parents must be carriers for a litter to risk developing it.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

If detected early enough, congenital hypothyroidism can be managed with thyroid medications. In some cases, however, medications do not work and the thyroid continues to enlarge over time, eventually blocking the airway and resulting in death.

Symptoms

Dogs with congenital hypothyroidism have signs of dwarfism, like short legs and large heads. As puppies, they have reduced movement and are smaller than littermates. They also may have visible swelling on the thyroid gland. As the condition progresses, dogs develop neurological and muscular problems.
