Hypocatalasia, also known as acatalasemia, is a genetic disorder primarily affecting Beagles and American Foxhound dogs. It is caused by a mutation on the CAT gene and affects the performance of catalase. As a result, dogs with this condition can suffer from damage to their soft tissue.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

In most cases, dogs with the condition do not require any treatment. However, dogs who experience ulcers as a result of the condition can be more susceptible to oral infection. It’s recommended that these dogs get regular oral care and any ulcers are monitored closely.

Symptoms

Most dogs with hypocatalasia or acatalasemia show no symptoms. However, the disease can lead to deep ulcers within a dog’s mouth, as well as periodontitis, a type of gum disease.
