Goniodysgenesis is a genetic disease affecting Border Collies caused by a mutation in the OLFML3 gene. It is a developmental abnormality that affects necessary drainage in the eye. This causes pressure to build in the eye, damaging the retina. This condition can lead to glaucoma and blindness.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

Goniodysgenesis may be managed with medicated eye drops or surgery. If the condition progresses to glaucoma, eye removal may be the best solution.

Symptoms

Signs of goniodysgenesis include red, watery eyes with dilated pupils, sudden sensitivity to light, and severe pain. Dogs may experience behavioral changes and be sensitive to touch near their eyes. If left untreated, goniodysgenesis may lead to glaucoma and blindness.
