Cystinuria is a kidney disorder that is most commonly found in English Bulldogs, due to their genetic predisposition for mutation in the SLC3A1 gene. These mutations cause a buildup of cystine in a dog’s urine, causing crystals and stones to develop. This can lead to blockages of the urethra, causing difficult and painful urination and sometimes preventing the flow of urine altogether.

Genetic research has linked this gene and condition in the following breeds:

English Bulldog, French Bulldog

A brown and white dog is running through a grassy field. The dog's tail is wagging, and it looks happy and energetic. There are some rocks and trees in the background.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There are many available treatments for cystinuria, including prescription diets and medications aimed at diluting urine. If blockages have already occurred, non-surgical removal may be possible. If stones are too large, removal may require surgery.

Symptoms

Symptoms of cystinuria include straining or pain when urinating, blood in the urine, and only passing small amounts of urine at a time. If left untreated, cystinuria can lead to urinary tract infection, kidney failure, and death.
