Cerebellar cortical degeneration is a progressive neurological disease affecting Vizslas caused by a mutation in the SNX14 gene. The condition causes nerve cells in the cerebellum to die, impacting coordination.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There is no known cure or treatment for cerebellar cortical degeneration. Many choose to put down dogs affected by this condition due to poor quality of life.

Symptoms

Symptoms of cerebellar cortical degeneration typically appear around 3 months of age. Dogs with the condition experience increasingly poor coordination, including head tremors, poor reflexes, and ataxia. This condition can become extremely severe over months.
