KCNJ10-related spinocerebellar ataxia is a genetic disease related to a mutation in the KCNJ10 gene. It’s a neurological disorder that causes a lack of coordination and balance. Dogs with the condition may also experience epileptic seizures.

What does this mean for a dog with this trait?

There is no known cure for spinocerebellar ataxia. Dogs with the condition are typically put down due to poor quality of life.

Symptoms

Signs of spinocerebellar ataxia typically appear between 2 and 6 months of age. They include uncoordinated movements, like frequent falling and a leaping gait. Dogs also experience sudden muscle twitches or stiffness and may have epileptic seizures.
