Primary hyperoxaluria is a genetic disorder that affects Coton de Tulear dogs and is caused by a mutation in the AGXT gene. Dogs with primary hyperoxaluria lack the enzymes needed to break down glyoxylate, causing a build-up of both oxalate and calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys. This disorder leads to death within the first few months of life.
