Originated
The ancestors of the Chihuahua trace back to the time of the ancient Toltec civilization in Mexico. They were bred for companionship and considered a sacred animal. They were believed to have healing powers and even placed in tombs to guide the souls of the dead to the underworld.
Breed
Chihuahuas are loyal and affectionate to their owners but can be wary of strangers. They are known to be fearless and can be stubborn, but with consistent training, they can be well-behaved. Due to their small size, they may not be great with young children and do better in homes with older children or adults.
Today
Today, Chihuahuas are popular family pets and are recognized by the American Kennel Club. They thrive in apartments and small homes and are known for their spunky personalities. Famous Chihuahuas include Tinker Bell from the reality show 'The Simple Life' and Bruiser Woods from the movie 'Legally Blonde'.
How to care!
Exercise
Chihuahuas are small but energetic dogs that require daily exercise such as short walks or playtime indoors. They do well in apartments but appreciate time outside to run and play.
Nutrition
Chihuahuas should be fed a high-quality diet. As a small breed they can suffer from hypoglycemia, and this can be managed by providing small meals 3-4 times a day. They can be prone to dental issues, so dental hygiene should be a priority.
Grooming
Chihuahuas have short or long-haired coats. While dogs with short coats only require occasional brushing, long-haired Chihuahuas will need regular brushing to prevent matting.
Training
Chihuahuas can be trained with positive reinforcement methods and consistent training. Due to their stubborn nature, they may need extra patience and persistence. Socialization is important to help them feel comfortable around new people and animals.
