Originated
Despite their name, Australian Shepherds come from the Western United States, where 19th-century cowboys developed them to herd livestock. Aussies gained popularity through rodeo appearances and quickly became beloved family pets.
Breed
Australian Shepherds are intelligent, energetic, and affectionate dogs, loyal to their families but may be reserved with strangers. Aussies get along well with other pets but may try to herd them.
Today
Today, Australian Shepherds are popular family pets, therapy dogs, and search and rescue dogs. They also excel at dog sports like agility courses and dog Frisbee!
How to care!
Exercise
Australian Shepherds are highly active dogs and require at least one hour of daily exercise. They enjoy running, hiking, swimming, and, of course, playing fetch.
Nutrition
Australian Shepherds need high-quality dog food appropriate for their age, weight, and activity level. Feed them twice a day.
Grooming
Australian Shepherds shed a lot! Brush their double coat every day with a de-shedding tool to keep them comfortable and their furn healthy. Aussies also need occasional baths.
Training
Australian Shepherds are highly trainable and do best with positive reinforcement such as treats and praise. Socialize them at an early age to help develop their friendly disposition.
